Chalkmarks See wonderful Wallonia....Belgium at its best

WEEKEND break in Belgium is all well and good yet Flanders – with Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp – hogs the limelight.

How about Wallonia? This is the French-speaking southern part of the country, which has much to offer. There’s the famous Leffe beers of Hainaut, the sparkling wines of Ruffus, which has a two-year waiting list to buy a bottle and the award winning chocolates of Legast.

If history’s your thing Wallonia is home to Waterloo, the battlefield not the station. The region is dotted with medieval chateaus, abbeys and palaces surrounded by forests valleys, and rivers.

There are cities to explore too, including the capital Namur, Dinant – birthplace of the saxophone – Mariembourg, which is EU recognised for its natural beauty and then there’s Durbuy that calls itself the world’s smallest city.

After all that sightseeing you can indulge in a cone of frites on the banks of the Lesse.
