WITH summer holidays on hold more families than ever could be planning a Christmas getaway this year.

Travel giant Tui has revealed that the most popular searches during lockdown are Spain and the Canary Islands, ideal for those seeking winter sun.

For long haul breaks, Florida is proving to be the most popular.

The tour operator has also tipped the Caribbean as a top destination for Christmas and the New Year.

For sunseekers, temperatures in the Canaries in December peak at around 20C and for Florida in the mid-20Cs. In Barbados the mercury soars to 30C.

A TUI UK spokesperson said: “The current uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 and its impact on travel has slowed bookings. However, web search data demonstrates that people are continuing to search for holidays. Family favourite destinations such as Florida, mainland Spain and the Canaries are still top on searched destinations and we may see a demand for Caribbean holidays for winter sun at the end of 2020 and into 2021.

We know people are still dreaming of travel and we are excited and ready to take our customers on their dream holidays as soon as we are able to.”

Currently, the Foreign Office advises against all non-essential travel “indefinitely”. Spain is in lockdown having declared a State of Emergency on March 14 and the US has also closed its borders.

Tui has cancelled all its holidays until May 14, 2020.
