NEWLYWEDS whose big day was curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic are splurging on expensive “double honeymoons”.
This year they are taking romantic trips close to home but bookings are already up for next year to long-haul islands in the Indian Ocean, which are the hot spots for 2021, according to travel firm Kuoni.
The top choice for mini-moons are Italy, Greece, Spain followed by England, Scotland and Ireland.
Couples are also saving up to spend big on extras as safety during the ongoing crisis becomes a priority.
The average cost of a romantic trip has leapt by more than £500 to £8,247 as couples opt for more privacy. The average cost of a booking in 2019 was £7,709.
Kuoni has seen a rise in bookings that include upgrades on flights, accommodation as well as helicopter transfers and experiences such as hot air balloon rides.
Trends also show a demand for private pools, in-villa dining and remote retreats.

The Maldives remains popular becoming the best-selling destination for 2021 followed by Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Only two European countries make the Top 10: Italy and Greece.
Derek Jones, CEO of Kuoni, said: “A honeymoon is still the most important holiday of a couple’s life and the signs are that despite the turmoil in travel, people are still determined to adapt their wedding and honeymoon plans within the guidelines so we’ve booked all sorts of last minute trips closer to home.
“But there’s no doubt that the romance of travel is alive and well and the lure of the wonders of the world is still as strong as it ever was.”
